Logbook

What Munin has seen.

An open log of the development: reports from real drives, milestones in the system, and findings along the way. Updated as the work progresses.

Ready for more devices

A new Munin can now be set up from a USB stick with a single command, and updated over the network from the device's own page. Data is organised per car, so a car's history always stays with the right car. The next device will be set up exactly as a new user would do it.

Tested against known faults

To test Munin against faults with a known answer, the mass air flow sensor was disconnected for one drive. The report found it: the signal was stuck, the car had set a pending fault code, and the EGR valve was held closed as a result. On another drive the air filter was partly blocked. The report did not find that, because the change only showed at part load. Both results matter equally for the work ahead.

The reference is set

All five system groups (cooling, slow cooling, air, pressure and mechanics) now have their own model, trained in the car on the car's own drives with no human involved. The first reference was frozen on 23 to 25 September. Through the first year the reference follows the car, so it sees every season. On the anniversary it locks.

First monthly report, no human involved

The first automatic monthly report was made and sent on its due date, from the moment the schedule triggered until the PDF landed in the inbox, with nobody touching it. At the same time, Munin closed the loop from June: it found the thermostat fault, the replacement was logged in the service record, the reports after the replacement noticed the difference, and Munin now confirms that the new thermostat holds the temperature where it should. Finding, repair and confirmation in one system.

One car, one identity

Each car gets one locked identity (VIN) on all data, checked against the Norwegian Public Roads Administration using the owner's registration number. One car's history cannot be moved to another car.

The whole chain with no human involved

Switching off the ignition ends the drive. After the drive, the device learns from what it has seen and shuts down cleanly. Proven in the car, several times in a row.

Munin runs on Jetson

Munin now runs in the car on a Jetson Orin Nano Super, with processor and GPU on the same device.

The journey to the next generation has begun

The Raspberry Pi 5 could no longer handle the tasks Munin needs. Work to move Munin to a Jetson Orin Nano Super, with processor and AI GPU on the same device, has begun.
